A Brief History of Fandom

Where fanfic began...

Fanfic didn't begin on the internet. It was originally printed in amateur

publications called fanzines. Fanzines are sold at cost through the mail or

at conventions. Although fanzines were originally mimeoed or dittoed, they

have become increasingly sophisticated with computer generated graphics,

spiral or perfect binding ,and color cover illustrations to make a more

attractive package for buyers. Many fanzine editors and distributors now have

The first fanfic was science fiction with original characters, but a
group of Star Trek fans began to write stories based on Classic Trek while
the series was on the air in the sixties. Thus media oriented fanfic was
born. Fanzines can be devoted to a single series ,or they can be multimedia
covering stories from a great many series. There are zines specializing in
Highlander fanfic, but HL fanfic is also available in multimedia zines.
Erotic Star Trek fanfic for adults started appearing at the end of the
sixties. Eventually adult fanfic spread to other fandoms including HL..
Those wanting to obtain adult fanzines must submit a signed age statement
with their order. They will not be knowingly sold to minors.
